A 1146 mile cycle ride from Land's End to John o' Groats

Day 8 – Clun to Ellesmere

We left the Youth Hostel fairly early this morning. Quite glad to be up and out of our dorm. Sharing a room with six sweaty, noisy, middle-aged cyclists was a bit weird. Both Joe and myself were woken in the middle of the night by a tremendous fart. Not nice.

We had a route choice and decided to take the hilly option. The road was long and steep but when we reached the top of the Stiperstones the views were brilliant. We had a long, fast decent then gently rolling countryside all the way to The Red Lion Coaching Inn at Ellesmere.

We both feel good after today’s 50 mile ride. Better than we’ve felt for a while. The weather helped, sunshine and clouds, but we just felt generally stronger and more positive.
Reached a top speed of 45.2mph today. Don’t tell Amy.

Total distance so far: 445 miles

Just tuned in to your blog, sounds like you are both doing really well. Very encouraging for us as we are just under two weeks away from our start. Hope the rest of the trip goes brilliantly and you have many adventures. We will be following your blog. Steve and boys (from CTC forum)

Sounds utterly amazing, I’m not sure I would want to go up or down an incline of 20%!

You’d love it. Up or down is fun, one at the time, one looking back at it when it’s over.
